Helping Heart2Home renovate The Dream Center

What a night!!  Serve Ur Village joined in the fun for demo night at the Dream Center.  We learned that the  Jazz Bear has some serious Harley skills and he breaks glass with his paws.  Leading the way, Jazz Bear helped Heart2Home and a wonderful group of volunteers blast windows, rip out carpet, demolish a kitchen and remove tile flooring at the Dream Center.

The Dream Center building was in much need of a renovation and Heart2Home's efforts will help the center continue to reach their goals of meeting and caring for the needs of the refugee children and families in the surrounding neighborhoods.   The Dream Center also reaches out to other areas of Salt Lake City to carry their motto to all who are in need of a helping hand...."Our dream is to see you live yours".

Back on July 5th, Heart2Home partnered with Foster The Future, the charity initiative of grammy nominated band Foster The People to kick off this renovation project and build excitement in the community.  Everyone is excited for the big reveal on Friday at 3pm.

Big thanks to all the volunteers who signed up through Serve Ur Village to help out Monday night.  They continue to need help at the renovation site.  If you would like to get involved, donate or volunteer, check out Heart2Home at their website Heart2HomeFoundation.org

Helping Others, Help Others

July was a big month for us here at Serve Ur Village.  Karen had a great time helping Glue Projects organize a Do Good Project for Foster The Future, the philanthropic foundation started by Foster The People.  It was an amazing day and we had a blast helping here in Salt Lake City and volunteering in a couple of other locations.

Here in Salt Lake City Do Good Projects/Foster The Future worked at The Dream Center, kicking off a remodel project spear-headed by Heart2Home.  We sorted clothes, cleaned and cleaned, built a new play ground, put on our green thumb, landscaped and an awesome mural went up with everyone's hand prints making the leaves on the tree.

Serve Ur Village will be going back out, as an official Village trip to The Dream Center when Heart2Home continues the project in October.  Stay tuned for details!

Check out all the good that Do Good Projects/Foster The Future did! These guys rock in more ways than one!

Thank you Rebecca and Glue Projects! Thank you Foster The Future! Thank you Foster the People!

You all continue to inspire us here at Serve Ur Village!

Memorial Day Clean Up at Orem City Cemetery

Serve Ur Village spent the morning of May 23rd at Orem City Cemetery doing some landscape cleanup to help them prepare for their Memorial Day service, the next Monday morning.  We edged flower beds, cleared away leaves and weeds between rocks, swept and beautified the area.
This cemetery has a special place in my heart. It was a privilege to bring a few friends, family and all over great volunteers, young and old, to lend a hand in serving the village.
Thank you volunteers! Without you, it would just be me, and well....that would be boring and very slow work.

*Memorial Day is an American federal holiday observed annually on the last Monday of May.  Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. - Wikipedia
It is a holiday for many who take time to remember special loved ones.

Murray Greenhouse Foundation

Serve Ur Village service trip to Murray Greenhouse Foundation

From the website of the Murray Greenhouse Foundation

For years people in our community have asked “what will happen to people with disabilities when they reach age 22 and can no longer attend the public school system?”  Government budgeting constraints leave thousands of people and their families with little or no support.  As a result, skills learned in school deteriorates, and isolation from friends and other community support grows.
The Murray Greenhouse Foundation offers a solution.  Conceived as a safe and nurturing learning place whose cornerstone is our greenhouse, the Foundation provides the teaching of individualized independent living skills and employment skills for people with disabilities.  Here, people can learn the skills necessary to be successful at work and in their personal lives to help build a better life for themselves and their families.

Serve Ur Village had the privilege of spending a few hours on Saturday March 24th, with the wonderful people of the Murray Greenhouse Foundation. The weather was beautiful, and their greenhouse is amazing. We helped build plant tables, weed, plant vegetables, moved a compost pile, raked up needles and wired 100 pots.  This is such a wonderful foundation. We loved meeting Sheila, Vanessa and Diane.  The minute we walked in their doors, we knew this was a special place. Thank you for all you do for your community. Thanks for giving us at Serve Ur Village the opportunity to help you.  Thank you to the volunteers! Your hands are the only way we can make these projects happen at Serve Ur Village! Thank You!!

They sell their vegetables and potted plants and flowers to the public.  All proceeds support the foundation.

Serving the Village.....

Received a note from the foundation Serve Ur Village will be working with on Saturday. They said it’s an honor to have us coming. I say, it’s a honor to serve you! :) That’s what it’s all about. Weather will be beautiful. I’m so excited!

Yesterday, we spent an hour with the next charity we will be working with, talking about what will happen on the day, projects to be done, and learning more about their charity.  As always, I was so moved by their vision, their compassion, and the wonderful service they provide to the community.  So excited to bring in Serve Ur Village and do some good!

March 24th ..... a good day to Serve Ur Village.
When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It’s as though something inside your body responds and says, yes, this is how I ought to feel.

Serve Ur Village visits Hoofbeats to Healing

On Saturday, January 21st,  a group of volunteers with Serve Ur Village loaded up in our SUV's and a van, and helped at Hoofbeats to Healing, a therapeutic riding arena. Hoofbeats to Healing is dedicated to providing therapeutic horse back riding in Utah. Using an effective natural approach to therapy via Missouri Fox Trotter horses and is run by Tami Tanner.

Our group of 20 worked together with another service group Heart2Home and pulled weeds, built a dog kennel, worked on electrical projects in a bathroom and moved a large mound of shavings, indoors.  Some of our volunteers also enjoyed grooming a horse, for the very first time.  Over 60 hours of service hours provided in an hour and half.  A big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers because much of this was done in weather that was, well, typical Utah; snow, cold, wet, and more cold.  The hearts of such compassionate, caring souls left me in awe.
